No alcohol is safe when it comes to protecting your brain
2 min readWhen it comes to brain health, a new study from the University of Oxford has found that there is no such thing as a safe amount of alcohol consumption. This study joins the body of research that develops into alcohol and its potential impacts in various aspects of health, some of which have suggested that the guidelines for alcohol intake may need to be reviewed.
A number of previous studies have seen the impact of alcohol on brain health, and it is no secret that drinking long-term weight associated with brain damage. However, most moderate consumption has been seen as safe, at least when it comes to brain health, but this new study of the Oxford challenge.
This study, which was observational, involved data on more than 25,000 middle-aged participants from the English Biobank study. The data includes information about things such as alcohol consumption at the beginning of research, cognitive testing, and scanning of the MRI’s brain.
The researchers connects alcohol consumption with a negative impact on the volume of global brain gray material, and the micro structure of white matter. The study noted that participants who had high BMI and high blood pressure were also at greater risk of suffering from brain health losses as a result of alcohol consumption.
Note, the researchers found that the impact of moderate alcohol consumption on brain health was greater than previously believed. Drinking parties is associated with additional damage compared to those who have moderate consumption habits. Likewise, the type of alcohol – whether wine, beer, or spirit – does not affect the results.
