What is Low Level Laser Therapy
2 min readLow level laser therapy is a kind of alternative medicine, which applies high-energy lasers or light-emitting diode lasers to the skin or body tissue. Whereas high-powered lasers are often used in modern laser surgery to either cut or remove tissue, it’s claimed that application of low-powered lasers promotes and relieves pain by stimulating and healing cell function. This therapy can be performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthetic or in a hospital operating room under a surgical laser.
Some people believe that low level lasers have been around since the 1950s and were used in military exercises. However, there’s no evidence to support that claim. In fact, this treatment is relatively new. There are now several facilities across the United States that offer low level laser therapy as an outpatient procedure for various conditions. Prior to receiving this treatment, patients should consult with their physician to find out what is appropriate for their particular condition.
For some conditions, low level laser therapy may help reduce or eliminate symptoms. For example, dermatitis, muscle and joint pain, burns, scar tissue and acne are all treatable through laser therapy. Other conditions that are thought to benefit from low level laser therapy include age spots, rosacea, and sun damage.
Patients must understand that laser surgery carries a number of risks and side effects. These may include temporary visual impairments, increased risk of infections, blood vessel damage and loss of blood flow to the heart. Some patients find that they experience pain during or after the procedure. These symptoms may subside over time if the patient takes certain pain medications. It’s important for patients to understand all of these risks before deciding on laser therapy.
Once patients are advised of all of the risks associated with laser procedures, they can discuss whether or not low level laser therapy will be right for them. Only then can they decide if they wish to pursue laser treatment to address their issues. If a patient decides to undergo laser surgery, he or she should do their research and carefully consider the options.
In general low level laser therapy is considered safe when performed by an experienced professional. Many practitioners utilize a one-way vision system to provide patients with clearer images. However, it should be noted that this system does have its drawbacks. Some people are born with congenital defects which cannot be corrected with this type of laser. Others have had eye issues resolved through laser treatment in the past but for some may be a first time procedure.
